RC Laser Racing Rules
The following modified racing rules have been developed by the Waterways RC Laser club in Melbourne. The club is keen to get comments from the RCL community. RCL Modified Racing Rules - Waterways Goal: To promote fair and competitive one design fleet sailing within a friendly and fun environment. Rules: 1. You may hit buoys, provided you go around the correct course side. 2. Buoy room right away applies …. Down wind / Reaching – When an OVERLAP is established at 4 boat lengths (4m / 12 ft radius) from the buoy, regardless of how the overlap was established. Port & Starboard do not apply when sailing down wind within 4 boat lengths (4m / 12 ft radius) of the buoy. Downwind boats must give way to boats sailing upwind on starboard. Upwind – Port tack boat must keep clear, when on Port, whilst tacking onto Starboard, must keep clear immediately after tacking and must not tack directly in front of a Starboard tack boat, when within 4 boat lengths (4m / 12 ft radius) from the windward mark. Any infringement within 4 boat lengths (4m / 12 ft radius) of a buoy rounding, requires a 360 deg penalty turn by yacht(s) not giving buoy room. 3. Windward boat keeps clear …. - Unless buoy room applies, port / starboard applies or the windward boat has no headway / steerage. - Luffing rights apply only if prior warning of 2 seconds before luffing and maximum luffing rights is up to head to wind. - No luffing rights apply within 4 boats lengths (4m / 12 ft radius) of the finish line, room must be given for overtaking / near-by boats to finish. 4. Minor touches / collisions are acceptable, if both yachts are travelling in the same direction and on the same tack and only if a clear 2 second warning prior to luffing has not been given. 5. Port & Starboard apply. 6. A 360 deg penalty turn applies. Penalty turn includes one tack and one gybe and Must be done immediately, when infringing boat has headway and is clear. 7. No provision for protests, all penalties must be sorted out on the water at the first available opportunity. 8. PRO / Judges decision is final. 9. A PRO and / or Race Organisers, may disqualify a competitor(s) from a race or event, should a competitor(s) be deemed NOT to be sailing fair spirited, not completing required penalties, being unduly aggressive to other competitors or constantly sailing with undue aggression, creating a poor or unfriendly environment. 10. Starting Rules; - No barging, windward boats keep clear. - Over start line early, must return around either end of the start line or dip back through the start line, making sure the entire boat is on pre-start side. - Boats luffing on starboard tack prior to start with no forward headway, have right of way, provided they are on pre-start side of course.
